Heard Project

This project addressed erosion issues from boat traffic and adjacent structures using plants and two different wave breaking structures: coir logs and a low-profile rock toe sills.

Reclamation Before

This property featured two sources of erosion that had to be addressed separately. The first is pictured here. After just 5 years after a bulkhead installation on the adjacent property, the Heard property had lost nearly 100 square foot of upland land.

Reclamation After

A low-profile rock toe sill was installed to protect the reclaimed area that was planted with native black needle rush grasses (Juncus roemerianus).

Enhancement Before

The other side of the Heard property had experienced mild erosion from boat traffic. Alternative measures to prevent the erosion (logs tied to upland trees) had been ineffective and unsightly.

Enhancement After

An intertidal marsh featuring native black needle rush grasses (J. roemerianus) was installed to slow further upland erosion while temporary wave breaking structures (i.e., coir logs) were installed in staggered pattern to allow the plants to establish.
