I founded Alabama Living Shorelines (ALS) in 2018, in part, in response to feedback from folks I interacted with while a PhD student in the Coastal Conservation and Restoration Program at Mississippi State University (MSU). Part of our mission then was to engage homeowners on the use of living shorelines over hardened structures like bulkheads. During several homeowner-focused workshops, we found that most folks were interested in living shorelines but there were simply no contractors offering design and permitting services for these projects at that time. I started ALS to help those folks.

Since then, I have remained committed to helping homeowners with living shorelines - but in a different role. The main reason is that is there are now many free resources available to folks interested in living shorelines. These include FREE site assessment, project design, and permitting services and cost-share programs. ALS has evolved accordingly to provide general project management and environmental consulting services.

Though our role has changed, our mission to provide customized, environmentally-sound solutions for our clients remains the same.

Our Leadership

Nigel Temple, owner/founder

Before starting PhD work at Mississippi State University, Nigel obtained biology degrees at Virginia Tech (B.S.) and the University of Alabama (M.S.). During this period his research interests have covered a broad spectrum of aquatic ecology from mountain streams to coastal wetlands, but recently his work has focused on ways to improve coastal restoration. To that end, he has designed new low-cost environmental monitoring methods, improved the cost-effectiveness of restoration projects (including Living Shorelines projects) and led environmental monitoring and assessment of large-scale restoration projects. In all, Nigel has over 10 years experience in plant ecology research and has published several extension and peer-reviewed scientific journal articles.

Prior to his academic pursuits, Nigel worked in the construction industry for 10 years as a home improvement sub-contractor. When he’s not working, you can find him near the water or at his home in Fairhope that he shares with his wife, daughter, and pets.
