      <image:title>Home - Our Story</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea that led to the formation of Alabama Living Shorelines, LLC was born from numerous interactions between landowners and other coastal stakeholders, and owner/founder Nigel Temple during his time as a PhD student at Mississippi State’s Coastal Research and Extension Center. During this period, Nigel found many landowners that shared his passion to improve our coastal areas but with limited access to contractors specializing in Living Shorelines designs, permitting and installation. The creation of Alabama Living Shorelines, LLC in 2018 was a response to this need with the goal of helping environmentally-conscious property owners address coastal challenges. In this pursuit, we leverage a combined 20+ years experience in residential construction and landscaping, and over 8 years research experience to deliver structurally- and environmentally-sound restoration and Living Shorelines projects for our clients.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Completed projects and reviews - Enhancement Before</image:title>
<image:caption>The other side of the Heard property had experienced mild erosion from boat traffic. Alternative measures to prevent the erosion (logs tied to upland trees) had been ineffective and unsightly.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Completed projects and reviews - Reclamation Before</image:title>
<image:caption>This property featured two sources of erosion that had to be addressed separately. The first is pictured here. After just 5 years after a bulkhead installation on the adjacent property, the Heard property had lost nearly 100 square foot of upland land.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An intertidal marsh featuring native black needle rush grasses (J. roemerianus) was installed to slow further upland erosion while temporary wave breaking structures (i.e., coir logs) were installed in staggered pattern to allow the plants to establish.</image:caption>
